What does the Winkey do ? (Windows XP)

The Winkey is the key on your computer keyboard that has a flag on it, usually located on the same row as the space bar. For many computer user's the Winkey is a mysterious key that is very seldom used. However it has many uses that you might find helpful. Here is a list of some of the Winkey functions. Try each of these shortcuts, it will not only show you a function, but will make you more familiar with where these destinations are on your computer.

  • Winkey------Toggles the display of the Start Menu
  • Winkey + Break------Displays the System Properties dialog box
  • Winkey + Tab------Moves the focus to the next button in the Taskbar
  • Winkey + Shift + Tab------Moves the focus to the previuos button in the taskbar
  • Winkey + B------Moves the focus to the notification area
  • Winkey + D------Displays the Desktop
  • Winkey + E------Opens the Explorer Window showing My Computer
  • Winkey + F------Opens a Search Results window and activates Search Companion
  • Winkey + Ctrl + F------Opens a Search Results window, activates Search Companion and starts a Search for Computer
  • Winkey + F1------Opens a Help and Support window
  • Winkey + M------Issues a Minimize All command
  • Winkey + Shift + M------Issues an Undo Minimize All command
  • Winkey + R------Displays the Run dialog box
  • Winkey + U------Displays the Utility Manager
  • Winkey + L------Locks the computer--(See note below)
  • (NOTE: Winkey + L in WinXP operates in two different ways. If you have Fast User Switching turned on, it allows you to switch users. If Fast User Switching is off, then Winkey + L locks the desktop.)
