I was lead to write this article after the recent Hurricane disaster in the Gulf Coast

If you have been Rving for any length of time, then you are probably familiar with inverters. They operate off the RV batteries or a tow vehicle battery, if you are in a travel trailer or 5th wheel. If you have a motorhome, then you probably also have a generator. The huge advantage to having an inverter, is that you can use it in the middle of nowhere, as long as you have a battery source. It will power nearly any electrical device that you would have in an RV. TV's, Radio's, some cooking devices, water pumps and more.

The reason for this article though is to make you aware of how you can communicate with the outside world during or after a disaster. Normal types of communications may not work or be available, so you would have to turn to alternative communications. One of these is the Satellite Internet setup. If you have an inverter to power the Satellite setup, you can send emails and keep in contact with friends and relatives. If you also have the type that delivers TV reception, then you can use it to get valuable information about the disaster and what to do next and which way to go to get help or assist those that need it.

As long as you can maintain a battery source you are in good shape. Many disasters that happen, first give some sort of warning, such as the recent hurricane disaster in the Gulf Coast. Maintaining a battery source means having fuel in your Motorhome or tow vehicle so that you can run the engine to recharge the batteries. I am sure we will be hearing stories coming out of the recent disaster, where RVer's equipped this way were able to not only communicate with loved ones, but were also able to help others do the same using their communications equipment.

We use a 450w inverter to power our TV's, Computers, Satellite TV dish and more. We have not used it to power a Internet Satellite dish, I think for that and all the rest I would get an inverter that is 1000w minimum. Here is an example of an Inverter
